College Admissions Exams

These are exams that are usually required in order to apply to a 4-year college or university. Though some colleges and universities are test optional, we suggest that you take at least one exam if you plan to apply to 4-year schools. Colleges and universities do not prefer one over the other, and accept both the ACT and the SAT*. Preparation before taking each exam is recommended.

Students generally take the ACT once during junior year and 1-2 times during the fall of senior year.

*It is important to learn about the differences between each exam so that you can decide which you prefer to take.

ACT

The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject areas in English, Math, Reading and Science.  The ACT is accepted by all 4-year colleges and universities in the U.S.  The ACT is subject based and consists of 215 multiple-choice questions as well as an OPTIONAL writing section.

For further information on the ACT, for practice tests or to register, visit www.actstudent.org

SAT

The SAT is a globally recognized college admission test that lets you show colleges what you know and how well you can apply that knowledge. It tests your knowledge of reading, writing, math, and an optional essay.

Students generally take the SAT once in the spring of their junior year and 1-2 times during the fall of their senior year.

In order to learn about the SAT, take practice tests or to register for an exam, visit http://sat.collegeboard.org/home.

PSAT

The PSAT/NMSQT is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Cooperation.  It’s a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT.

Information for the PSAT /NMSQT can also be found at collegeboard.org.

Students generally take the PSAT during 11th grade.

In order to apply for accommodations for the SAT or PSAT, fill out a ‘consent form for accommodations’ from your Guidance Counselor.
