Basketball – The Henry Viscardi School Wheelchair Basketball Program was created to allow children of all levels of physical disabilities to play together as a team and to reach their highest potential as athletes. The program gives children a chance to have fun, learn to respect individual needs, as well as learn good sportsmanship and teamwork. Our goal is to encourage individuality, heighten self-esteem, and provide a safe environment for each member of the team. Our basketball league consists of three teams: “Cubbies” for grades 1 – 4, “Junior Varsity Cougars” for grades 5 – 8, and “Varsity Cougars” for grades 9 – RAMP. The Cubbies focus on skills and drills, and the Cougars are more competitive and play in tournaments with other local area wheelchair basketball teams. The Henry Viscardi School Wheelchair Basketball Program hosts an annual tournament every December and also participates in the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged in the Spring. Our Basketball program culminates in an annual awards dinner in June.

Student Council – a prominent student government organization, gives students a voice in determining school activities and environment. It helps promote activities for the entire student body at Henry Viscardi High School and fosters a positive climate throughout the school.
Being a member of student council is both an honor and a challenge. Members must maintain high academic standards and also plan and organize social events such as Spirit Week, and maintain the Viscardi school store. Student Council conducts a holiday food drive for Island Harvest. No doubt, Student Council encourages students to increase responsibility and take pride in their school and community. Student Council representatives are elected in each class for a one-year term. They meet monthly during lunch periods, where polices are discussed and plans are established for activities throughout the year.
Viscardi Chapter of the National Honor Society – The Viscardi Chapter of the National Honor Society is a piece of a nationally recognized organization that recognizes outstanding high school students. Students are inducted into the chapter based on outstanding GPA and a Faculty Council review of leadership, character, scholarship, service and advocacy. The Viscardi Chapter promotes these characteristics, as well as service projects to assist the school community. Service projects have included: development of a Henry Viscardi School Brochure to promote our school to the community, and a Viscardi Flea Market to raise money for students and school programs. Viscardi Independent Living House – The Independent Living overnight program provides Henry Viscardi School students in grades 11, 12, and R.A.M.P., with the opportunity to spend time away from their homes in a supervised atmosphere. The students must work together using a pre-determined budget to provide for their needs during the overnight. Some of the activities include shopping for the dinner and breakfast to be prepared by students, establishing appropriate duties for each individual, and arranging for an approved activity in the afternoon. This program has been a tremendous success at Viscardi. Students have an opportunity to hone their independent living skills, as well as to confront and resolve real life challenges.
