The Viscardi Center’s founder, Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr., was posthumously inducted into the Long Island Business Hall of Fame this evening at an event held at the Crest Hollow Country Club. The first class of inductees included 20 of the most distinguished leaders in the business community. The Hall of Fame, established by Long Island Business News, is a high honor for those who demonstrate a commitment to excellence: past, present and future. A plaque bearing the names of those inducted will be displayed at Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business.
Phillip Mayer, Student at HVS, Selected as “Embracing Our Differences” Winner
Phillip Mayer, a student at Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center, was chosen as one of the winners of the “Embracing Our Differences” competition, an annual juried art exhibit sponsored by the Center on the Holocaust, Diversity, and Human Understanding. The purpose of the exhibit is to search for ideas and methods to spread respect for human rights. Phillip’s Photoshop project was completed in his Media Technology class.
Viscardi Soaring to New Heights in JetBlue Airways In-flight Video
The Viscardi Center, a network of non-profit organizations providing a lifespan of services that educate, employ and empower people with disabilities, is the focus of an in-flight video feature being shown on the seatbacks of all JetBlue Airways flights during the month of October – National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The piece focuses on students of the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center, employers’ future talent pool, and highlights their goals and accomplishments while bringing to light challenges people with disabilities face when they travel.
New Date for Back-to-School Night
To avoid any conflict with The Viscardi Center’s 3rd Annual Golf Outing and evening reception scheduled for Monday, September 21, Henry Viscardi School’s “Back-to-School Night” has been changed.
The new date is: Thursday, September 24, 7-9 PM.
Come Bike With Us! – Team Viscardi Inaugural Legacy Ride Announced
Team Viscardi will once again cycle to raise awareness of The Viscardi Center and critical funds for children and adults with disabilities. The inaugural Legacy Ride, starting at The Viscardi Center, will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2015 (rain date October 17). Riders of all abilities are welcome to participate in this 11-mile bike ride that begins in Albertson and will be police-escorted. A 1-mile Kids Fun Ride, BBQ, activities for children and entertainment will follow the Legacy Ride, making it a full-day of family fun.
Henry Viscardi School and Surf for All Partner for Third Annual Student Surf Outing
STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES SURF IN LONG BEACH
On July 16, 2015, students of the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center had the chance to catch some waves and experience the thrill of surfing at National Beach in Long Beach, NY. The afternoon of surfing and beach fun, which included their families and friends, was made possible by the Long Beach non-profit Surf for All which introduces people with disabilities to surfing.
Henry Viscardi School holds 48th Commencement Ceremony
Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center, which serves children with severe physical disabilities, held its 48th Commencement Ceremony on June 25, 2015. President and CEO of The Viscardi Center, John D. Kemp, drew attention to the fact that the students were graduating during a landmark year, the 25th anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In his remarks, Kemp noted, “Your self-advocacy, and that for others, has begun here at Viscardi. Now go out and continue to shape the world for all of us with disabilities. Show your talents. Your pride. Your greatness.”
Henry Viscardi School Recognizes Student Achievement
ANNUAL SENIOR AWARDS CEREMONY ACKNOWLEDGES ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Albertson, NY, June 17, 2015… During its traditional senior awards ceremony, held on June 11, 2015, the Henry Viscardi School at The Viscardi Center recognized students’ academic, social and extracurricular achievements earned throughout the school year. Superintendent and Principal of Henry Viscardi School (HVS), Diana DeVivio kicked off the awards ceremony in front of an excited crowd of classmates, family, friends, and staff.
“These awards celebrate some of our seniors fantastic accomplishments over the year, however these to not signify an end, but a beginning. The beginning of a long successful journey for all of our incredible students,” said DeVivio. Before each award was presented to the recipient, an HVS faculty or staff member spoke about the individual student’s successes over the school year.
