Elena Cucharo, a music teacher at Viscardi has been asked to present at the New York State School Music Association Conference (NYSSMA). Elena L. Cucharo graduated from C.W. Post University in 2008, with a B.M. in Music Education. She began teaching at the Henry Viscardi School in July of 2008 and in September was officially appointed the school’s music teacher. It was this new position, coupled with the extraordinary students of Viscardi that inspired Elena to begin research into providing better and more adaptive techniques for teaching music education to students with physical disabilities.
This research afforded Elena the opportunity to further her own education and in September of 2010, she earned her M.A in Music History from C.W. Post. Her thesis, entitled “Everyone Plays Together: Adaptive Strategies and Instruments to Raise the Level of Musical Participation in Students with Physical Disabilities” has inspired teachers, of able and disabled students alike, to introduce new and innovative techniques that help facilitate inclusion and participation in the music classroom.
In recognition of Elena’s passion and hard work, she has been asked to present her thesis, and the work surrounding it, at the upcoming 2011 NYSSMA Conference to be held on December 3rd in Rochester, NY. Currently, Elena continues her work at Viscardi and plans to begin her Doctoral program in 2012.

Songs included “On Top of Spaghetti”, “Food Glorious Food”, and “Meatballs!” The props composed of giant meatballs, hotdogs, French fries, pies, and pancakes, were constructed entirely by students.

Team Viscardi was created with the idea that a group of colleagues can come together and attempt something that they individually thought of as a dream. Twenty-six Henry Viscardi staff members and up until now, strangers, teamed together to not only train and compete in the Ride to Montauk but to raise money for the students of the Henry Viscardi School.
We have been training together since March, where we started simply with a 10-mile ride and each week increased the distances by 5 miles at a time training finished on June 5 with an 80-mile practice ride.
The Ride to Montauk was held on Saturday June 18, 2011. The ride had two specific starting points. The 100-mile ride began at the Babylon train station at 7 a.m. and the 65-mile ride began at the Mastic-Shirley train station at 8 a.m. Both rides ended in the town of Montauk. All riders from team Viscardi finished successfully and safely.

On Friday May 6, Assemblyman Charles Lavine visited with Henry Viscardi School students. He visited a tenth grade English class and accepted a special citation from the students, thanking him for his support of our school and other 4201 schools. One of our elementary students used his DynaVox, expressing a special welcome to Assemblyman Lavine.
Assemblyman Lavine also took a tour of the museum dedicated to our founder, Dr. Henry Viscardi, and he spoke about meeting Dr. Viscardi many years ago. We would like to thank Assemblyman Lavine for coming to visit Viscardi and look forward to his continued support.

From Islanders vs. Viscardi- April 4, 2011 |
On Monday, April 4 2011, the New York Islanders visited the Henry Viscardi School and played our students in a game of floor hockey. The Islanders originally visited our school in December and promised to return with more of their teammates to take on our students in a game of floor hockey. When they returned they brought several of their teammates, the Islanders that came to our school included some of their biggest stars: PA Parenteau, Matt Moulson, John Tavares, Josh Bailey, Blake Comeau, Zenon Konopka, Micheal Haley and Matt Martin.
The game was action packed and fun for all involved. The Islanders and Viscardi traded goals back and forth and ended regulation in a tie. The game then went to overtime where Viscardi scored the winning goal in sudden death to win the game 4-3. After the game the Islanders spent time signing autographs and talking with our students.
Our students enjoyed the Islanders visit to our school and look forward to them returning for a rematch!!
